Welcome to Modern Foreign Languages!

We are a department of three linguists, all specialists in the languages we teach.  We are enthusiastic about our subject and believe passionately in the importance of studying a language.  We focus not only on the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in the foreign language but also on developing independent learning techniques and other transferable skills.

French and German are offered, with the majority of pupils doing one language.  Some pupils have the opportunity to study both; they are selected using data and teacher recommendations.

The study of a language is optional at KS4 at present, though this is under review.

We offer both exchanges and residential trips to Germany and France.  We have a partner school in Solms, Germany, with whom we run an exchange and also a partner school in Picardy, France, with whom one year 9 class do a joint project.  We run residential trips to France:  last summer (2015) 63 KS3 pupils visited Paris and Disneyland, and in the summer of 2016 we are planning a KS4 French language trip to Roscoff.
